* How to do double-braided yarn extensions

Yarn extensions are a cheap way to do something fun and interesting with your hair. I got this idea and many others from the newsgroup alt.gothic.fashion. A good place to look at lots of pretty people with cool hair and to learn more about fake hair is Kathryn Quinn's page.

Double-braided yard extensions, I've found, are a good way to add bulk and length to your hair while camoflaging the spot where your real hair ends. This works even better if you pick yarn that matches your hair colour. I by no means claim that this is the best method of going about this particular activity, it is only my feeble opinion. But, I've found that it works for me- so bear with me and ignore my filthy carpet, pixies, I'm trying to teach you something.

Shall we begin?

Here's what you need:

- hair gel
- some hair clips of varying sizes
- pliers
- a big, blunt needle
- a ball of string [optional]
- scissors
- a comb
- yarn- the amount varies, I ended up using 2 and a half 3.5 oz balls for my blonde braids

I'll be demonstrating on a package of kanekelon hair, but obviously, things may be a bit trickier on an actual head. Section off a chunk of hair, using the comb to make the edges at the root neat. Use the hair clips to keep the rest of your hair out of the way. Braid it tightly and use gel to slick down flyaways.

Measure out your yarn, six strands, each a bit more than double the length you want your braid to be. You can add or subtract the number of strands for a thicker or thinner braid.
